Today in the New York Times’s exhaustive coverage of every little thing Jeff Koons does, we learned that Koons has been tapped by philanthropist group Project Perpetual and the United Nations Foundation to create a series of sculptures that will raise money for children’s vaccines. In order to create his pieces, the artist is using material from luxury handbags donated by Diane von Furstenberg, Sofia Coppola, Almine Ruiz-Picasso, and other boldfaced names, including royalty — perhaps his most literal pile of celebrity fetishism yet. Of course, the cause is admirable, so here’s hoping collectors crack open their equally impressive pocketbooks for the auction at the Four Seasons on November 9. Meanwhile, next up on Koons Watch: the artist eats a late lunch, stands near something that now has cachet.
